Grooming Tips for the Golden Retriever

By Cindra Grooming Products - USA-Made, Professional Grooming Essentials

The Golden Retriever is a sporting breed valued for its steady temperament, athletic ability, and iconic golden coat. Proper grooming preserves both function and appearance, supporting skin health, managing shedding, and maintaining the breed’s natural outline without excessive trimming or alteration.

COAT

The Golden Retriever coat is dense and water-repellent with a good undercoat. The outer coat is firm and resilient, neither coarse nor silky, and lies close to the body. It may be straight or wavy. A natural ruff is present, with moderate feathering on the backs of the forelegs and underbody, and heavier feathering on the front of the neck, backs of the thighs, and underside of the tail.

The coat on the head, paws, and front of the legs is short and even. Excessive length, open coats, and limp or overly soft coats are undesirable. Feet may be tidied and stray hairs neatened, but the natural outline and appearance of the coat should never be altered by cutting or clipping.

CHARACTER

Golden Retrievers are eager, alert, and self-confident. They are friendly, reliable, and trustworthy, with a stable temperament that makes routine grooming easy when handled consistently. Their cooperative nature allows for thorough coat care when introduced early and maintained regularly.

Seasonal Shedding

Golden Retrievers experience heavy seasonal shedding, particularly in spring and fall. During these periods, daily brushing is recommended to remove undercoat efficiently and keep skin healthy.
