Grooming the Clumber Spaniel

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Clumber Spaniel is a heavy, dignified British sporting breed known for a dense, straight, flat body coat and a well-developed neck frill. Grooming requires balance: hydration without heaviness, cleanliness without stripping, and structure without stiffness. The substantial white coat and dense feathering present specific challenges around brightening, mat prevention, and complete drying.

Coat

The Clumber Spaniel’s body coat is dense, straight, and flat with a naturally weather-resistant texture. Unlike many sporting breeds, the coat is soft to the touch rather than harsh. Moderate feathering appears on the legs and belly, while the ears carry straight, lightly feathered hair. A well-developed neck frill is a defining characteristic of the breed and should be preserved through proper grooming. The predominant color is white with lemon or orange markings. The coat should appear substantial and functional — never overly sculpted, fluffed, or thinned.

Character

The Clumber Spaniel is loyal, affectionate, and notably steady in temperament. Calm and thoughtful, the breed forms deep bonds with its family while remaining reserved with strangers. This composed nature carries into grooming — Clumbers generally tolerate routine care well when handled consistently and without haste. Despite their placid appearance, they are determined and able gun dogs in the field. Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush 2–3 times per week using a pin brush or medium slicker followed by a steel comb to ensure the coat is separated fully to the skin. Pay special attention to the neck frill, ear feathering, leg furnishings, and behind the elbows — these are the primary matting zones. Keep the frill clean and fully separated.

Bathing

Bathe every 4–6 weeks, or as needed based on activity level. Thorough pre-rinsing is essential given coat density. Select shampoo based on current coat condition. After bathing, blot excess moisture with towels and dry fully with a high-velocity dryer on a moderate setting — complete drying prevents mildew odor, skin irritation, and matting in the frill and feathered areas.

Show Preparation

Apply Silhouette Topline & Thickening Crème along the back and topline on a clean, dry coat to enhance the flat body coat’s lay and add visible thickening volume to the breed’s substantial silhouette. Work through with fingertips and style as desired.

Trimming

Tidy feet, neaten feathering where excessively long, and keep sanitary areas clean. The natural outline of the breed should be maintained. Avoid over-thinning the neck frill or shaping the body coat.

Shedding

Clumber Spaniels shed steadily year-round — this is a heavy-shedding breed for its size. Heavier periods occur in spring and fall. Increase brushing frequency during these periods to manage loose coat and support skin health.
