Grooming the Brittany Spaniel

Kess- Sovereign’s Legendary Aerial Ambush CGC
Owned by Lauren Sandrin, Bred by Joe and Dawn Droel

COAT
The Brittany has a dense, flat to slightly wavy coat with a clean, functional texture. The coat should never appear wiry or silky. Feathering on the ears is minimal, and while the front and hind legs carry some feathering, moderation is key—too little is preferable to excess. This breed’s coat is designed for field work, offering protection without heaviness or drag.

CHARACTER
The Brittany is a happy, alert, and energetic sporting dog. Known for enthusiasm and responsiveness, this breed thrives on activity and benefits from a grooming routine that supports comfort, cleanliness, and coat function rather than excessive styling.

Problem Solution
Dry, damaged coat Our version of a hot oil treatment: Wet dog with warm water, apply Moisture Plus liberally. Wrap in a warm towel for 15–20 minutes. Shampoo with Moisturizing Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
Dingy white coat Use Cleansing Shampoo on the first lather, wait 5 minutes, then rinse. Follow with Texturizing Shampoo and rinse.
Spot whitening / urine stains Apply a small amount of Cleansing Shampoo full strength, wait 5 minutes, then rinse.
Shedding around the house Spray lightly with Maxicare and brush daily, making sure to reach the skin. Shedding cannot be eliminated completely—it is a normal, healthy process for sporting breeds.
Building bone and substance Apply a small amount of Sculpting Gel to fingertips, warm between hands, and apply to legs. Back brush gently and allow to dry naturally.

General Grooming Guidelines for the Brittany Spaniel

The Brittany is a wash-and-wear sporting breed, but that doesn’t mean grooming should be ignored. A consistent, low-maintenance routine keeps the coat functional, the skin healthy, and the dog comfortable in both field and home environments.

Brushing

Brush the Brittany 2–3 times per week using a slicker brush or soft pin brush. Focus on removing loose hair, debris from outdoor activity, and preventing matting behind the ears and in feathered areas. Regular brushing helps distribute natural oils and keeps the coat breathable.

Bathing

Bathe every 3–4 weeks or as needed after heavy outdoor work. Avoid harsh shampoos that strip the coat. Brittany coats perform best when clean, lightly textured, and free from residue rather than overly soft or flat.

Trimming

Minimal trimming is required. Neaten feet, tidy feathering if excessive, and lightly blend ears as needed. The goal is a natural outline that supports movement and coat function—not sculpting or exaggeration.

Ears & Maintenance

Check ears weekly, especially for dogs that hunt or swim. Clean gently with a dog-safe ear cleaner to prevent buildup and irritation.
