Grooming the Australian Cattle dog

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Australian Cattle Dog is a rugged, hardworking herding breed developed for endurance, resilience, and efficiency in harsh environments. Grooming is straightforward but purposeful — proper care supports skin health, manages shedding, and preserves the dense, weather-resistant coat without altering its natural function.

Coat

The Australian Cattle Dog has a smooth double coat: a short, straight, hard outer coat and a dense undercoat designed to protect against heat, cold, moisture, and rough terrain. A correct coat feels firm and resilient — never soft, fluffy, or oily. Excessive conditioning, over-bathing, or heavy coat products interfere with the coat's natural protective properties.

Character

Australian Cattle Dogs are intelligent, alert, and intensely loyal. Bred to think independently while working livestock, they respond best to calm, confident handling. Grooming routines introduced early and kept consistent build cooperation and trust — rushed or forceful grooming often creates resistance in this breed.

Recommended Cindra Products

  • Texturizing Shampoo — maintains correct coat texture and resilience without over-softening
  • Moisturizing Shampoo — for skin support during dry conditions or frequent bathing
  • Maxi Care — lightweight leave-in to assist brushing, reduce static, and manage shedding

Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Excess shedding Brush several times per week and daily during heavy shedding. Lightly mist Maxi Care before brushing to reduce static and coat breakage.
Undercoat buildup Use a rubber curry or slicker brush followed by a comb to remove loose undercoat down to the skin.
Dry or itchy skin Bathe with Moisturizing Shampoo, ensuring thorough rinsing to prevent residue.
Dull coat Use Texturizing Shampoo to restore natural sheen without softening the coat.
Static or flyaway hair Lightly mist Maxi Care and brush through to smooth without heaviness.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush weekly, increasing to daily during seasonal shedding. Use a rubber curry brush or slicker to loosen dead coat, followed by a wide-tooth comb to confirm you are reaching the skin. A light mist of Maxi Care before brushing reduces friction and coat stress.

Bathing

Bathe every 4–6 weeks or as needed. Use Texturizing Shampoo for routine maintenance; switch to Moisturizing Shampoo if skin becomes dry or irritated. Rinse thoroughly.

Drying

Towel dry thoroughly. Forced-air drying on a low setting during shedding seasons helps remove loose undercoat. A light mist of Maxi Care during drying reduces static.

Shedding

ACDs shed consistently year-round with heavier seasonal coat blows. Increased brushing — not increased bathing — is the most effective management approach. Shedding is a normal, necessary process.
