Grooming the Great Dane

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Great Dane coat should be short, thick, and clean with a smooth, glossy appearance. Because the coat lies tightly against the body, skin condition and coat quality become immediately visible. Grooming focuses on healthy skin, balanced coat condition, and natural shine without creating greasy buildup or excessive softness.

Coat

The Great Dane coat should be short, thick, and clean with a smooth, glossy appearance. It lies tightly against the body and should maintain healthy shine without appearing greasy. Because the coat is short and close-fitting, buildup, dryness, and poor coat condition become noticeable very quickly.

Character

Spirited and courageous, never timid, always friendly and dependable. Despite enormous size, Great Danes are generally affectionate and social dogs that thrive on close companionship. Most respond extremely well to calm grooming routines and enjoy physical contact when introduced properly. Because of giant size, early grooming routines are essential.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Dry coat Apply Moisture Plus full strength to dry areas.
Dull coat Reconstructor restores natural gloss.
Dingy white or harlequin areas First lather with Cleansing Shampoo, wait 5 min, rinse; follow with Texturizing Shampoo.
Residue / itching after bath Rinse longer — residue on a short coat is the most common cause of post-bath dullness and irritation.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brush weekly with a rubber curry or grooming mitt to remove dead coat and stimulate circulation. Bathe every 4–6 weeks with Texturizing Shampoo. Rinse completely — leftover residue on this coat causes dullness and irritation. Conditioning is rarely needed; use Moisture Plus only on dry areas. Dry thoroughly.

Shedding

Moderate year-round shedding with heavier periods in spring and fall. Regular brushing is the most effective management tool.
