Coat

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno comes in two coat varieties — smooth and wire — both tight and weatherproof in any shade of yellow, fawn, or black, with or without white markings. The smooth variety has a short, easy-care coat; the wire variety carries a slightly longer, rougher texture that benefits from occasional hand stripping. Both varieties feature large, erect, triangular ears that give the breed its alert expression.

Character

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is tough, brave, fast, and light on its feet — an enormous personality in a small package. Bred as a warren hound to catch rabbits, the Pequeno carries strong hunting instincts and a quick mind. They are intelligent and independent, requiring an owner experienced with both terrier-like tenacity and hound-like focus on scent.
