The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced shoh-loh-eets-KWEENT-lee) — also called the Xolo or Mexican Hairless — is one of the world’s oldest and rarest breeds, with a history spanning thousands of years in Mexico. It comes in two varieties (hairless and coated) and three sizes (toy, miniature, standard). The grooming needs of each variety are dramatically different.
The Xoloitzcuintli comes in two distinct varieties. The hairless variety has skin that is tough, smooth, and close-fitting with no coat on the body. Some sparse hair may appear on the head, feet, and tail tip, which is acceptable but not required. The skin is the primary grooming focus: it requires moisturizing, sun protection, and regular bathing to stay healthy. The coated variety has a short, flat, dense coat similar to other smooth-coated breeds. It sheds lightly and requires minimal maintenance beyond regular brushing and bathing. Colors in both varieties include dark colors — charcoal, slate, red-gray, liver, and bronze — as well as spotted or splashed patterns.
The Xoloitzcuintli is calm, loyal, and attentive — a devoted companion that forms deep bonds with its family. It is alert and makes an excellent watchdog, but is not aggressive. It can be reserved with strangers, particularly in the smaller sizes, and benefits from early socialization. The Xolo is intelligent and trainable, responsive to positive methods. Despite appearances, the hairless variety is not hypoallergenic — it can still produce allergenic proteins in its saliva and skin oils. The breed’s ancient origins give it a calm dignity unusual in smaller breeds.

Bathing is the primary grooming task for the hairless Xolo. Bathe weekly or every two weeks using Moisturizing Shampoo — gentle enough to use frequently without stripping the skin’s natural oils. Work shampoo into the skin gently; rinse completely. After bathing, apply a small amount of dog-safe, unscented moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration. Dry completely and gently before outdoor exposure to prevent sunburn on damp skin. Check the skin at every session for any redness, acne, dry patches, or irritation. Provide weather-appropriate clothing in cool conditions — this is not optional for this variety.
The coated Xolo is very low-maintenance. Brush weekly with a rubber curry brush or soft bristle brush to remove loose hair and distribute skin oils. Bathe every 4–6 weeks with Moisturizing Shampoo. Finish with a light mist of Super Coat for shine. No trimming required.
The hairless Xoloitzcuintli does not shed — there is no coat to shed. Any stray hairs from the head or feet are minimal and barely noticeable. The coated variety sheds lightly year-round; weekly brushing is sufficient management. Neither variety produces the dramatic seasonal coat blows seen in double-coated breeds.

Used the texturizing shampoo on my Border Collie puppy and I loved it! Rinses nicely, smells okay, coat feels really nice after drying. Other shampoos over-soften which isn't correct for the breed. The texturizing shampoo is just right!

Washed a dirty puppy and the cleansing shampoo got him *literally* squeaky clean. First time using a cleansing shampoo and I was impressed. I'm not a fan of the scent, but I cant argue with the results.
