Grooming for the Finnish Lapphund

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Finnish Lapphund is a hardy Nordic herding breed developed to work in extreme cold and harsh conditions. Their thick double coat is functional by design, providing insulation, weather resistance, and protection. Shaving or thinning the coat is not recommended — it disrupts insulation and coat function. Grooming focuses on preserving coat balance, managing shedding, and keeping the skin healthy.

Coat

The Finnish Lapphund has a dense double coat with a long, straight outer coat and a soft, insulating undercoat. The coat should appear natural, full, and weather-resistant. It was developed for extreme cold and harsh Nordic conditions and should never be shaved or thinned, as this disrupts both insulation and coat regrowth.

Character

Finnish Lapphunds are intelligent, alert, and people-oriented. They generally respond well to grooming when introduced early and handled calmly. Consistent routines prevent resistance during brushing, bathing, and drying.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush 2–3 times weekly, increasing to daily during seasonal coat blows. Line brush in sections to ensure undercoat is fully reached. Mist lightly with Maxi Care to reduce friction and coat breakage.

Bathing

Bathe every 6–10 weeks or as needed when dirty. Thoroughly wet the coat to the skin before applying shampoo. Select shampoo based on coat condition rather than schedule alone. Rinse completely.

Drying

Drying to the skin is essential for double-coated breeds. Towel blot first, then use a forced-air dryer while brushing to remove loose undercoat and prevent moisture trapped at the skin.

Shedding

Seasonal coat blows occur in spring and fall. During these periods, daily or every-other-day brushing manages shedding and supports healthy coat regrowth. This is a heavy-shedding breed during peak blow periods.
