grooming the Boston Terrier

By Tasha Mesina, Cindra Grooming Products

The Boston Terrier is a compact, short-coated breed designed for companionship rather than heavy work. While the coat appears simple, proper grooming plays an important role in maintaining skin health, coat balance, and overall comfort—especially for a breed prone to skin sensitivity and environmental irritation.

Correct grooming for the Boston Terrier focuses on cleanliness, gentle maintenance, and avoiding product buildup that can disrupt the skin barrier.

COAT

The Boston Terrier has a short, smooth, fine coat that lies close to the body. The coat is naturally sleek and should appear clean and healthy without excessive shine or oiliness. Because the coat is short, dirt, residue, and skin imbalance become noticeable quickly.

This coat provides minimal protection from environmental exposure, which makes skin care just as important as coat care. Over-bathing, harsh products, or residue left on the skin can lead to irritation, itching, or dull coat appearance.

CHARACTER

Boston Terriers are intelligent, friendly, and highly people-oriented. Known for their lively and affectionate nature, they thrive on interaction and routine. Their cooperative temperament generally makes grooming straightforward when handled calmly and consistently.

Because Boston Terriers are sensitive both physically and emotionally, grooming routines should be predictable and gentle, avoiding unnecessary steps or overstimulation.

PROBLEM & SOLUTION

PROBLEM SOLUTION
Dry or flaky skin Bathe with Moisturizing Shampoo and apply Moisture Plus Conditioner sparingly to dry areas only. Rinse thoroughly to prevent residue.
Dull or oily coat Reduce bathing frequency and focus on thorough rinsing. Use Maxi Care lightly between baths to support coat balance.
Post-bath itching Extend rinse time and avoid applying conditioner directly to the skin. Keep routines simple and product use minimal.

PUPPY VS ADULT COAT

Boston Terrier puppies often have a slightly softer coat that becomes firmer and more defined as they mature. During this transition, skin may be more sensitive and reactive to frequent bathing or product changes.

Puppy grooming should emphasize gentle cleansing with Moisturizing Shampoo , short sessions, and careful observation of skin response as the adult coat develops.

BATHING & DRYING

Most Boston Terriers do well with bathing every four to six weeks, depending on lifestyle and skin condition. Over-bathing can strip natural oils and lead to irritation or rebound oil production.

Use lukewarm water and rinse thoroughly. Because the coat is short, residue left on the skin is a common cause of itching and discomfort.

Towel drying is usually sufficient. Ensure skin folds around the face and neck are fully dry to prevent irritation.

BRUSHING & MAINTENANCE

Brushing once or twice per week helps remove loose hair, distribute natural oils, and keep the coat looking clean. A soft-bristle brush or grooming mitt works well for this coat type.

Between baths, light maintenance with Maxi Care is usually all that’s needed to keep the coat and skin comfortable.

TRIMMING

Trimming is not required for Boston Terriers. The coat should remain natural, with only basic hygiene care such as nail trimming and cleaning of facial folds if needed.

UNDERSTANDING SKIN HEALTH

Because Boston Terriers have minimal coat protection, maintaining a healthy skin barrier is essential. Product residue, over-bathing, and environmental irritants can quickly disrupt skin balance.
