Grooming the Chinese Crested

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Chinese Crested comes in two genuinely different varieties — Hairless and Powderpuff, sometimes born in the same litter — and the grooming routine depends almost entirely on which one you have. The Hairless variety needs skin care more than coat care, including real sun protection, while the Powderpuff carries a full, silky double coat that needs daily brushing to stay mat-free.

COAT

Per the AKC standard, the Hairless variety carries hair only on certain portions of the body: the head (called the crest), the tail (called the plume), and the feet from the toes to the front pasterns and rear hock joints (called socks). All hair present is soft and silky and may flow to any length. Where the body is hairless, the skin itself is soft and smooth.

The Powderpuff variety, by contrast, is completely covered with a double coat that's soft and silky throughout. A closer look reveals long, thin guard hairs over a short, silky undercoat, with the overall coat straight, of moderate density, and moderate length.

CHARACTER

The American Chinese Crested Club describes the breed as lively, alert, playful, and entertaining — funny little dogs that enjoy human companionship and love to please. Their small size and the Hairless variety's exposed skin call for a gentle touch during grooming, particularly around sensitive areas.

Common Coat Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Detangling/dematting (Powderpuff) Apply full-strength Moisture Plus liberally to the mat, wait 15 minutes, then gently pull apart with fingers or a comb.
Greasy coat (Powderpuff) Use Cleansing Shampoo instead of Moisturizing Shampoo.
Coat lacks body (Powderpuff) Use Texturizing Shampoo instead of Moisturizing Shampoo.
Dingy white coat Lather with Cleansing Shampoo first, wait 5 minutes, rinse, then lather with Moisturizing Shampoo and rinse.
Dry or exposed skin, blackheads/acne (Hairless) Moisturize bare skin daily with diluted Moisture Plus to keep skin supple. Resist squeezing blackheads or pimples, which can cause infection and scarring; a consistent weekly bath is the best prevention.
Thin leg furnishings/feathers Spray diluted Texturizing Mist into a damp coat and fluff dry with a blow dryer.

Hands On Grooming Guide

For Hairless Chinese Cresteds, the focus shifts almost entirely to skin care. The American Chinese Crested Club recommends weekly bathing with a quality shampoo and conditioner as the key prevention for acne and blackheads, paired with clean bedding and good general health — resist the urge to squeeze any breakouts, since that can cause infection and scarring. Follow bathing with a light, diluted conditioner or moisturizer daily to prevent the skin from drying out, since this skin is fully exposed to the elements the way a coated breed's never is. Sun protection matters too: use a dog-safe sunscreen or light clothing during outdoor time, since hairless skin sunburns and is more vulnerable to skin cancer over a lifetime.

For the crest, plume, and sock hair present even on Hairless dogs, gentle brushing every other day and the occasional conditioning treatment keeps these areas soft and untangled.

For Powderpuff dogs, daily brushing is non-negotiable — their fine, silky double coat mats easily, and skipping even a day or two can mean real detangling work later. Use a pin brush and comb, paying close attention to friction points like behind the ears and under the legs. Bathe with a shampoo suited to current coat condition, and dry thoroughly to avoid dampness sitting against the skin.

Shedding

Chinese Cresteds, particularly the Hairless variety, shed minimally given how little coat they carry. Powderpuffs shed lightly, but daily brushing is still required to prevent matting rather than to manage loose hair. No Chinese Crested is truly hypoallergenic, despite the breed's reputation — low shedding simply means a smaller effect on allergy sufferers, not none.

Puppy vs Adult Coat Care

Life Stage Coat Characteristics Grooming Focus
Puppy Crest, plume, and sock hair (Hairless) or full puff coat still developing (Powderpuff); puppy ears may need taping to stand erect Gentle skin or coat handling to build a positive routine early; ear taping should only be done with breeder/vet guidance
Adult Established hairless pattern with crest/plume/socks, or full silky double coat (Powderpuff) Weekly bathing and daily skin moisturizing (Hairless) or daily brushing and dematting (Powderpuff)
