Grooming the Chinook

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Chinook is a rare American working breed developed for sledding and endurance work. The dense double coat is designed for weather resistance and athletic movement. Correct grooming preserves coat function and healthy undercoat without softening or sculpting — the coat should appear clean, healthy, and naturally substantial.

Coat

The Chinook has a dense double coat with a soft insulating undercoat and a coarser outer coat designed for weather resistance. Coat length and density vary with season and climate but should always maintain healthy texture and functional protection. The outer coat should never appear soft, silky, or fluffy. Seasonal coat blow can be substantial.

Character

Intelligent, gentle, hardworking, and deeply people-oriented. Unlike some northern breeds, Chinooks are known for their cooperative temperament and strong desire to work closely with their families. Athletic but steady — most tolerate brushing, bathing, and handling very well when grooming is introduced consistently from a young age.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution

Compacted undercoat Mist Maxi Care while line brushing to the skin to loosen undercoat.
Dry, damaged coat Wet with warm water, apply Moisture Plus liberally, wrap in warm towel 15–20 min, shampoo with Moisturizing Shampoo.
Flat coat for show Super Coat diluted 50/50 while line brushing.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Line brush weekly, increasing to daily during seasonal coat blow. Focus on the neck, tail, breeching, and behind the ears. Use a slicker then confirm with a wide-tooth comb to skin level. Mist Maxi Care lightly to improve brush glide. Force drying during heavy shedding removes dead undercoat more efficiently than brushing alone. Bathe every 6–8 weeks with Texturizing Shampoo. Rinse completely.

Shedding

Significant seasonal shedding in spring and fall. Force drying and line brushing combined are the most effective management tools. Shedding is normal and necessary.
