Grooming the Cirneco dell'Etna

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Cirneco dell’Etna is an ancient Sicilian hunting hound, named for the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna where the breed has worked for millennia. A keen, agile hunter built for rugged terrain, the Cirneco carries one of the simplest, lowest-maintenance coats among all hound breeds.

Coat

The Cirneco dell’Etna has a short, glossy coat, slightly harder in texture on the back and slightly shorter and finer on the head and ears. Colors range from light to dark fawn or chestnut, with or without white markings. The breed’s large erect ears and slim, athletic build give it a deer-like, alert expression. This coat requires almost no maintenance — weekly brushing and occasional bathing keep it healthy.

Character

The Cirneco dell’Etna is a keen hunter, adaptable to difficult terrain, strong-willed, alert, and an excellent companion. Bred to hunt by scent, sight, and hearing on rugged volcanic terrain, the Cirneco is athletic and independent. They are affectionate and gentle with their families while remaining somewhat reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and need consistent, positive training along with significant daily exercise. A rare breed in the United States but increasingly appreciated for its combination of athleticism and manageable size.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush weekly with a rubber curry brush or hound glove. Quick, easy work given the short, fine coat.

Bathing

Bathe every 4–6 weeks or as needed. Use Moisturizing Shampoo, rinse completely, and dry thoroughly. Finish with a light mist of Super Coat for shine.

Shedding

The Cirneco dell’Etna sheds lightly. Weekly brushing easily manages the minimal loose hair this breed produces.
