Grooming the English Toy Spaniel

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The English Toy Spaniel — historically known as the King Charles Spaniel — is a refined, flat-faced toy companion with a luxurious, silky coat and a regal history in English royal courts. Closely related to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, this breed shares similar long-coat grooming needs.

Coat

The English Toy Spaniel has a long, silky, straight (or slightly wavy) coat with abundant feathering on the ears, chest, legs, feet, and tail. Colors include Blenheim (chestnut on pearly white), Prince Charles (tricolor), King Charles (black and tan), and Ruby (solid red). The coat’s heavy feathering, particularly on the ears and feet, requires consistent attention to prevent matting. The breed’s flat face also means facial wrinkle and eye area care is part of routine grooming.

Character

The English Toy Spaniel is gentle, affectionate, and quietly dignified — a companion breed through and through, having served as the lapdog of choice for English royalty for centuries. They are calm indoors, content to spend hours near their people, and generally reserved with strangers. They do well in apartments and with less active households, though they still benefit from daily walks. Their flat face means they should be protected from extreme heat and strenuous exercise.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Cause Solution
Ear feathering matting Heavy ear feathering tangles easily; ears can drag in food Comb ear feathering daily with a steel comb; wipe ears clean after meals
Facial wrinkle and fold irritation Flat face creates skin folds that trap moisture Clean facial folds daily with a damp cloth; dry thoroughly
Foot feathering tangles Long feet hair collects debris Comb foot feathering regularly; trim hair between pads for cleanliness
Eye-area staining Tear drainage common in flat-faced breeds Wipe under eyes daily; consult a vet if staining is persistent

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush 2–3 times weekly with a pin brush, paying special attention to the ear, chest, leg, and tail feathering. Comb through with a steel comb to confirm no tangles remain. Daily attention to the ears specifically is recommended given how easily this area mats.

Bathing

Bathe every 3–4 weeks. Use Moisturizing Shampoo and always follow with Moisture Plus Conditioner. Clean facial folds carefully during the bath. Dry thoroughly, with particular attention to drying inside the wrinkles.

Daily Face Care

Clean facial wrinkles and wipe under the eyes daily. Dry completely after cleaning to prevent skin fold irritation common in flat-faced breeds.

Shedding

The English Toy Spaniel sheds moderately. Regular brushing manages loose hair effectively, though the feathering does require more attention than a simple short coat would.
