Grooming the Greater Swiss Mountain dog

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a short, dense double coat designed for Swiss alpine conditions. Grooming is functional: clean skin, managed shedding, and a coat that stays firm and clean. Drying after bathing is more important than it looks — moisture trapped in the dense undercoat causes skin irritation on a short-coated breed.

Coat

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a short outer coat approximately 1–2 inches in length, dense and slightly wavy is acceptable. The undercoat is thick and dense. Despite the short outer coat, the undercoat is substantial enough to trap moisture and cause skin problems if not properly dried.

Character

Bold, faithful, and willing to work. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is alert and energetic with a confident, good-natured temperament. Generally cooperative and tolerant of handling when grooming routines are introduced early and kept consistent. Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Dingy white chest/face markings First lather with Cleansing Shampoo, wait 5 min, rinse; follow with Texturizing Shampoo.
Dull coat Reconstructor restores natural gloss.
Dry skin Apply Moisture Plus targeted to dry areas; rinse thoroughly.
Skin irritation after bath Ensure complete rinsing and thorough force-air drying to the skin.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brush weekly with a rubber curry or grooming mitt. Bathe every 4–6 weeks with Texturizing Shampoo. Rinse completely. Force-air dry in sections — do not rely on toweling alone. Despite the short outer coat, the dense undercoat holds moisture at the skin, which causes odor and irritation if not fully dried.

Shedding

The Greater Swiss sheds moderately year-round with heavier seasonal periods. Weekly brushing is the most effective management tool.
