Grooming the Icelandic Sheepdog

By Tasha Mesina, Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Icelandic Sheepdog is a hardy, weather-resistant breed developed to thrive in harsh climates. Its thick double coat protects against wind, rain, and cold, but it also requires consistent, informed grooming to stay healthy and functional. Grooming an Icelandic Sheepdog is not about excessive bathing or cosmetic trimming — it's about maintaining coat balance, skin health, and seasonal shedding cycles.

Coat

The Icelandic Sheepdog has a dense double coat consisting of a soft, insulating undercoat and a coarse, water-resistant outer coat. Coat length varies slightly between individuals, but the structure remains the same: protective, resilient, and designed to shed naturally. This breed is a heavy seasonal shedder — proper grooming supports coat turnover and prevents excessive undercoat buildup, which can lead to skin irritation and overheating.

Character

Icelandic Sheepdogs are alert, cheerful, and people-oriented. They are typically tolerant of grooming when handled calmly and consistently. Because they are vocal and expressive, early grooming routines help prevent stress-related resistance and make long-term coat care easier.

Problems & Solutions

Problem: Heavy seasonal shedding — Solution: Increase brushing frequency and use Cleansing Shampoo to remove buildup without stripping essential oils.

Problem: Dry or dull coat — Solution: Use Moisturizing Shampoo paired with Moisture Plus Conditioner.

Problem: Excess undercoat retention — Solution: Support coat turnover with regular brushing and strategic bathing during shedding cycles.

Problem: Static or flyaway coat — Solution: Mist lightly with Maxi Care before brushing.

Puppy vs. Adult Coat

Understanding coat stages helps prevent common grooming mistakes, especially during the first major shed.

Life Stage: Puppy — Coat Characteristics: Softer, lighter coat — Grooming Focus: Handling, brushing habits, and positive exposure rather than heavy coat removal

Life Stage: Adolescent transition — Coat Characteristics: Shedding increases dramatically as adult coat develops — Grooming Focus: Regular brushing and supportive bathing to prevent undercoat compaction

Life Stage: Adult — Coat Characteristics: Dense, weather-resistant coat — Grooming Focus: Sheds cleanly and stays manageable with consistent grooming

Brushing Routine

Icelandic Sheepdogs should be brushed one to two times per week, increasing to several times weekly during seasonal sheds. Always mist lightly with Maxi Care before brushing to reduce friction.

Bathing and Drying

Bathing every 6–10 weeks is typical, with more frequent bathing during shedding periods.

  1. Pre-rinse thoroughly for 2–3 minutes.
  2. Use Cleansing Shampoo during heavy shedding or Moisturizing Shampoo for regular maintenance.
  3. Rinse completely.
  4. Apply Moisture Plus Conditioner and rinse thoroughly.

Drying thoroughly is essential. Towel blot and use airflow to fully dry the coat, brushing lightly to help release loose undercoat.

Trimming and Coat Length

Icelandic Sheepdogs should not be shaved. Trimming is limited to feet, sanitary areas, and minimal tidying for cleanliness. Shaving interferes with insulation and coat regrowth.
