Grooming the Kerry Blue Terrier

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Kerry Blue Terrier is a distinctive Irish terrier known for its soft blue coat, sculpted outline, and expressive beard. Unlike many terriers that carry harsh wire coats, the Kerry Blue has a dense, soft, wavy coat that grows continuously and must be maintained through regular grooming rather than seasonal shedding.

Coat

The Kerry Blue Terrier coat is soft, dense, and slightly wavy — not wiry, not silky. Unlike double-coated breeds, the Kerry coat grows continuously and does not shed heavily. Because loose hair does not fall out naturally, regular grooming is required to prevent tangles and matting. Puppies are born black and gradually transition to the familiar blue coloration as they mature — this color change may take up to two years to complete. Facial furnishings including the beard and eyebrows frame the terrier expression.

Character

Confident, alert, and intelligent. Originally developed in Ireland as a versatile working terrier, the Kerry Blue combines determination with strong loyalty. When grooming routines are introduced early, most Kerry Blues tolerate brushing, bathing, and trimming well. Consistent handling is key.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush 2–3 times weekly down to the skin. Pay special attention to areas where tangles form: behind the ears, under the legs, and within the beard. Mist Maxi Care lightly before brushing to improve slip and prevent breakage.

Bathing

Bathe every 3–4 weeks. Begin with a thorough rinse to penetrate the dense coat. For coats with buildup, use Cleansing Shampoo followed by Moisturizing Shampoo. Apply Moisture Plus to furnishings and beard after shampooing; rinse completely. Use a high-velocity dryer while brushing to straighten the coat before trimming.

Trimming

Professional trimming every 6–8 weeks maintains the classic Kerry Blue outline — shorter body coat with fuller legs, and facial furnishings that frame the terrier expression. Scissoring is standard; clipping with appropriate blade lengths can also be used for pet dogs.

Shedding

Kerry Blue Terriers do not experience heavy seasonal shedding. Because the coat grows continuously, loose hair must be removed through brushing and grooming rather than natural shedding cycles.
