Grooming the Papillon

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Papillon — French for "butterfly," named for its distinctive large, fringed, butterfly-shaped ears — is an elegant toy spaniel with a silky, single coat. Despite its luxurious appearance, the Papillon coat is single-layered and lacks a dense undercoat, making it one of the easier long-haired toy breeds to maintain.

Coat

The Papillon has a long, fine, silky single coat with no undercoat, flowing and straight in texture. The coat is profuse on the chest forming a frill, and the ears carry long fringing that contributes to the breed’s butterfly silhouette — the Phalene variety has dropped ears instead of the more common erect, fringed ears. The tail carries a long, flowing plume. Colors can be any combination with white as the predominant color. This single coat lies relatively flat and resists matting better than many double-coated long-haired breeds.

Character

The Papillon is intelligent, friendly, and surprisingly athletic for a toy breed — excelling in agility and obedience competitions far beyond what its dainty appearance might suggest. They are alert, happy, and eager to please, making them highly trainable. Papillons enjoy being the center of attention and form close bonds with their families. They are good with respectful older children and adapt well to apartment living, though they retain plenty of energy and benefit from regular play and mental stimulation.

Recommended Cindra Products

  • Moisturizing Shampoo — ideal for the silky single coat; maintains shine without weighing it down
  • Moisture Plus Conditioner — after every bath; keeps the ear fringing and tail plume tangle-free
  • Super Coat — diluted 90/10; reduces static on the fine coat, particularly the ear fringing

Problems & Solutions

Problem Cause Solution
Ear fringing tangling The long, butterfly-shaped ear fringing tangles if not regularly combed Comb ear fringing weekly with a steel comb; this is the area most prone to tangling on the breed
Tail plume matting Long flowing tail hair collects debris Brush and comb the tail plume weekly
Static and flyaways Low humidity; fine single coat texture Mist lightly with Super Coat diluted 90/10

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush weekly with a pin brush, working particular attention into the ear fringing, chest frill, and tail plume. Follow with a steel comb to confirm no tangles remain. The lack of undercoat means this coat is genuinely lower-maintenance than its dramatic appearance suggests.

Bathing

Bathe every 3–4 weeks. Use Moisturizing Shampoo and follow with Moisture Plus Conditioner. Dry with a dryer while brushing through, paying special attention to the ear fringing.

Shedding

The Papillon sheds at a low to moderate level given the lack of undercoat. Weekly brushing manages loose hair effectively, making this one of the cleaner long-coated toy breeds to live with.

Feature Puppy Adult
Ear fringing Minimal; full butterfly fringing develops over the first year Full ear fringing, chest frill, and tail plume
Grooming priority Build ear-handling tolerance early given the breed’s prominent ear feature Weekly brushing focusing on ear fringing

Quick Grooming Schedule
