Grooming the Pumi

The Pumi is a lively Hungarian herding breed recognized for its expressive ears, compact athletic build, and distinctive curly coat. Although the breed is relatively small, the coat requires thoughtful grooming to maintain its natural structure and prevent matting.

Proper grooming supports both coat health and the natural appearance of the Pumi. The goal is not to sculpt or reshape the coat, but to preserve its unique corkscrew curls while maintaining cleanliness, skin balance, and natural movement.

Coat

The Pumi coat is curly, dense, and elastic. It consists of a mix of harsher guard hairs and softer undercoat which combine to form natural corkscrew curls across the body.

Unlike many curly breeds, the Pumi coat should not appear fluffy or blown straight. The correct appearance shows clearly defined curls that lie close to the body while still providing volume and protection.

This coat evolved as a functional working coat for herding. It protects the dog from weather and brush while remaining flexible and easy to maintain with the proper grooming routine.

Character

The Pumi dog breed is intelligent, energetic, and highly responsive to its handler. These dogs thrive on interaction and learning, which means grooming routines are often easy to establish when introduced early.

Because Pumi dogs are active working dogs, consistent grooming also helps keep them comfortable during daily activity. Regular brushing and coat maintenance prevent tangles that could otherwise interfere with movement.
