Grooming the Rhodesian Ridgeback

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a powerful Southern African hunting breed best known for the distinctive ridge of backward-growing hair along its spine — once used to bay lions. A short, dense coat makes this one of the most genuinely low-maintenance breeds in the Hound Group.

Coat

The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a short, dense, sleek coat in shades from light wheaten to red wheaten. The defining feature is the ridge — a strip of hair along the spine that grows in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat, formed by two identical crowns or whorls. A small amount of white is permitted on the chest and toes; excessive white is a fault. The coat itself requires minimal grooming — this is a breed where exercise and structure matter far more than coat care.

Character

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is independent, intelligent, and dignified — a breed bred to track and bay big game in Southern Africa. They are loyal and protective of their families, with a strong prey drive rooted in their hunting heritage. Training should begin early and be firm but never harsh; Ridgebacks respond poorly to harsh correction. They are not recommended for first-time owners or homes with very young children, given their size and strength. With proper training and socialization, the Ridgeback is a devoted, dignified companion.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Cause Solution
Dermoid sinus (breed-specific skin defect) Congenital condition along the spine, sometimes near the ridge This is a medical, not grooming, issue — check the ridge area regularly and consult a vet if any unusual openings, lumps, or discharge are noticed, especially in puppies
Dull coat Infrequent brushing Weekly brushing with a rubber curry mitt or deshedding tool restores shine
Allergic skin reactions Environmental allergies are reported in the breed Use Moisturizing Shampoo; consult a vet if itching, redness, or ear infections are recurrent

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush weekly with a rubber curry mitt or deshedding tool to remove loose hair and maintain coat health. This is quick, easy work given the short coat type.

Bathing

Bathe only when visibly dirty or to manage shedding — the Ridgeback coat does not require frequent washing. Use Moisturizing Shampoo, rinse completely, and dry thoroughly. Finish with a light mist of Super Coat for a sleek, glossy finish.

Shedding

The Rhodesian Ridgeback sheds at an average level year-round. Weekly brushing with a rubber curry mitt or deshedding tool manages shedding effectively.
