Grooming the Rottweiler

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Rottweiler has a short, straight, coarse outer coat with a fine undercoat on the neck and thighs. The undercoat should not show through the outer coat. Proper grooming maintains healthy skin, natural shine, and the breed's clean, powerful presentation. Because the coat is short and tight, skin condition is immediately visible.

Coat

The outer coat is of medium length, coarse, dense, and flat. The undercoat, found on the neck and thighs, should not show through the outer coat. The coat should never appear fluffy or over-conditioned. Correct grooming preserves healthy skin while maintaining the breed's natural, clean outline.

Character

The Rottweiler is calm, confident, and courageous with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate friendships. Devoted and loyal, with an eagerness to work. Responds well to calm, structured grooming routines that are consistent and purposeful.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Dull coat Reconstructor restores natural gloss.
Greasy coat Bathe with Cleansing Shampoo; rinse thoroughly.
Dry thigh or neck undercoat Apply Moisture Plus targeted to those areas; rinse well.
Post-bath itching Rinse longer — residue on a short coat is the most common cause.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brush weekly with a rubber curry or grooming mitt. Bathe every 4–6 weeks with Texturizing Shampoo. Rinse completely. Pay attention to the thigh and neck areas where the undercoat is denser — rinse until water runs clear. Dry thoroughly; moisture trapped in the thigh undercoat can cause skin irritation.

Shedding

Rottweilers shed moderately year-round with heavier periods seasonally. The thigh and neck undercoat releases more noticeably during shedding cycles. Weekly brushing keeps this well managed.
