Grooming the German Shepherd Dog

By Cindra Grooming Products – USA-Made, Professional Grooming Essentials

The German Shepherd Dog is a versatile working breed with a coat designed for protection, endurance, and all-weather performance. Proper grooming maintains coat function, supports skin health, and manages heavy shedding without altering the breed’s natural outline.

COAT

The ideal German Shepherd Dog has a double coat of medium length. The outer coat is dense, straight, harsh, and lies close to the body. A slightly wavy outer coat, often of wiry texture, is permissible.

The head, including the inner ear and foreface, as well as the legs and paws, are covered with short hair. The neck carries longer and thicker hair, and the rear of the forelegs and hind legs has somewhat longer hair extending to the pastern and hock.

This is a functional double coat. Grooming should preserve weather resistance and coat density while preventing matting and excessive undercoat compaction.

CHARACTER

The German Shepherd Dog is direct, fearless, and self-confident without being hostile. The breed displays a natural aloofness rather than indiscriminate friendliness, standing calmly and confidently when approached.

Alert and eager when required, the German Shepherd is capable of serving as a companion, watchdog, guardian, guide dog, or herding dog. This stable temperament supports consistent grooming when routines are calm, structured, and purposeful.

Common German Shepherd Coat Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Detangling or dematting Apply a full-strength conditioning treatment to the mat, allow to sit 15 minutes, then gently separate using fingers or a comb.
Dry or damaged coat Wet the coat with warm water, apply Moisture Plus generously, wrap in a warm towel for 15–20 minutes, then shampoo using a skin-balancing bath shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
Dingy white areas First lather with a clarifying Cleansing Shampoo, allow to sit 5 minutes, rinse, then follow with a structure-support shampoo.
Increasing undercoat after shedding Once shedding is complete, line brush daily using a light leave-in conditioner to support healthy coat return.
Hot, dry show conditions Use Maxi Care as the only coat dressing.
Showing without full undercoat Apply a diluted Texturizing Mist (50:50) while line brushing to hold coat for presentation.
Spot whitening or urine stains Apply a deep-cleansing wash full strength, allow to sit 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Extra volume needed Apply Super Coat diluted 50:50 while line brushing. In very humid conditions, substitute a texture-support mist.
Shedding around the home Lightly mist Maxi Care for daily brushing and brush down to the skin. Shedding is normal and cannot be eliminated completely.

Bathing & Drying the German Shepherd Dog

Bathing

German Shepherds are typically bathed every four to six weeks, with additional baths after heavy dirt exposure. Begin with a thorough pre-rinse to allow shampoo to penetrate the dense undercoat.

Choose products based on coat condition rather than habit:

  • Use a moisturizing formula for routine maintenance and dry skin.
  • Use a texturizing wash when coat firmness needs support.

Always rinse thoroughly. Residue trapped in the undercoat can contribute to itching and dullness.

Drying

Proper drying is essential for this breed’s dense undercoat.

  • Use a high-velocity dryer introduced gradually.
  • Dry in sections while line brushing to ensure moisture is removed from the skin.
  • Finish with a light leave-in conditioner to support brush glide without softening the coat.

Seasonal Shedding

German Shepherd Dogs experience heavy seasonal shedding, particularly in spring and fall. During these periods, daily brushing is recommended to remove loose undercoat efficiently and maintain skin health.
