Grooming the Akita

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Akita is a powerful double-coated breed with a dense, weather-resistant coat designed for harsh environments. Correct grooming preserves coat function, maintains healthy skin, and supports the breed's natural structure and presentation. The coat should never appear soft, fluffy, sculpted, or over-conditioned.

Coat

The Akita is double coated. The undercoat is thick, soft, and dense — shorter than the outer coat. The outer coat is straight, harsh, and stands somewhat off the body. Hair is short on the head, legs, and ears. Coat at the withers and rump is slightly longer, and the tail carries the longest, fullest coat. A thick undercoat is expected and provides insulation and weather resistance. Excessive ruff or feathering is a fault.

Character

Alert and responsive, dignified and courageous. The Akita is intelligent and powerful with strong environmental awareness. Reserved with strangers, can be dominant toward other dogs. Most Akitas prefer calm, structured grooming routines and respond best to confident, respectful handling rather than excessive restraint or excitement.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Line Brushing

Line brushing is essential. Brushing only the surface leaves compacted undercoat trapped beneath the outer coat, which eventually affects skin health. Use a slicker first, then follow with a wide-tooth comb, working in small sections from the skin outward. Focus on friction zones: neck, breeching, tail, and behind the ears. Mist lightly with Maxi Care to reduce coat breakage.

Bathing

Bathe every 6–8 weeks. Use Texturizing Shampoo to clean without softening the guard coat. Rinse until the coat feels residue-free.

Forced-Air Drying

A high-velocity dryer during seasonal coat blow removes dead undercoat efficiently and improves airflow to the skin. Dry in the direction of coat growth.

What Not To Do

  • Do not shave — disrupts thermal regulation and coat regrowth
  • Do not thin or strip the jacket
  • Do not over-condition — soft coat is incorrect for the breed

Shedding

Akitas experience major seasonal coat blow in spring and fall. Daily brushing and force-air drying during these periods manages the shed and keeps skin comfortable. Increased brushing — not increased bathing — is the correct approach.
