Grooming the Biewer Terrier

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Biewer Terrier is a relatively new AKC breed — an elegant, tri-colored toy terrier descended from the Yorkshire Terrier, instantly recognizable by its long, silky coat parted down the middle and signature ponytail. Despite its compact size, this is genuinely one of the more grooming-intensive breeds in the Toy Group.

Coat

The Biewer Terrier has a long, flowing coat with a silky, smooth texture, straight, without undercoat, parting down the middle and hanging evenly on both sides. The defining tri-color pattern — black or blue, tan, and white in symmetrical placement — is a breed hallmark. The headfall is tied into a single ponytail finished with a bow, never the ratted or teased styling seen in some other toy breeds. This is a true full-coat breed: kept in full length, it requires daily or every-other-day grooming. Many pet owners opt for a shorter puppy cut, which reduces maintenance to weekly brushing.

Character

The Biewer Terrier is friendly, whimsical, and devoted — a breed whose only purpose, as the AKC notes, is to love and be loved. They are talkative, alert watchdogs that greet visitors enthusiastically. Many Biewers carry toys around well into adulthood, retaining a childlike playfulness. They are adaptable to apartment or farm life alike and generally good with people of all ages. An excellent companion for owners who want a toy breed with terrier spirit and minimal aggression.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Cause Solution
Matting in armpits, behind ears, and groin Silky coat tangles easily in high-friction zones if not brushed daily Brush daily for full-coat dogs; use Maxi Care before brushing to ease tangles
Ponytail tangling or falling out Single fall not maintained; coat too fine to hold the style without care Re-tie ponytail regularly; comb the headfall before tying; keep it simple per breed standard — no teasing or ratting
Coat losing silkiness Under-conditioning; harsh products Always follow shampoo with Moisture Plus Conditioner; use Maxi Care daily

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Full Coat Maintenance

For dogs kept in full coat, brush daily or every other day with a pin brush, working in sections from the skin outward. Mist with Maxi Care before brushing. Follow with a steel comb. Tie the headfall into a simple single ponytail with a bow — the breed standard explicitly penalizes excessive head styling like teasing or rolling.

Puppy Cut Maintenance

For pet dogs kept in a shorter trim, weekly brushing is sufficient. Scissor or clip every 6–8 weeks to maintain the shorter length.

Bathing

Bathe every 2–4 weeks. Use Moisturizing Shampoo and always follow with Moisture Plus Conditioner. Dry with a dryer while brushing through to prevent tangles from setting.

Shedding

The Biewer Terrier is a low-shedding breed without an undercoat. Loose hair is caught in the long coat rather than falling freely, which is precisely why daily brushing is necessary for full-coat dogs to prevent mats. Coats kept short shed even less noticeably.
