Grooming the Field Spaniel

Grooming the Field Spaniel

Coat

The Field Spaniel has a single coat that is moderately long, flat or slightly wavy, silky, glossy, and naturally water-repellent. Moderate setter-style feathering is present on the chest, underbody, backs of the legs, buttocks, and underside of the tail. Pasterns should maintain clean outlines to the ground, with short, soft hair between the toes. The coat should lie close and smooth, never fluffed or over-sculpted.

Character

The Field Spaniel is gentle, intelligent, and notably sensitive. Deeply devoted to its people, this breed thrives on companionship while often remaining reserved in initial interactions. Their thoughtful nature carries into grooming, where calm handling, consistency, and patience produce the best results.

Common Field Spaniel Coat Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Detangling / Dematting Apply Moisture Plus full strength directly to the mat. Allow to sit for 15 minutes, then gently separate using fingers or a comb.
Greasy coat Use Cindra Cleansing Shampoo in place of a moisturizing wash to rebalance the coat.
Coat lacks body Substitute Texturizing Shampoo when the coat needs more support and presence.
Flyaway hair Create an anti-static spray by mixing 2 tablespoons of Moisture Plus into 1 pint of water. Lightly mist and smooth as needed.
Dry, damaged coat Wet the dog with warm water, apply Moisture Plus Conditioner liberally, wrap in a warm towel for 15–20 minutes, then shampoo using Moisturizing Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
Thin leg furnishings / feathering Lightly mist diluted Texturizing Mist into a damp coat and fluff dry to enhance fullness without stiffness.

Brushing & Routine Coat Maintenance

Field Spaniels benefit from brushing two to three times per week to prevent tangles and keep the coat lying correctly. Use a pin brush to separate the coat, then follow with a medium-tooth metal comb to confirm you are down to the skin—especially behind the ears, at the elbows, and through the feathering. This is a single coat, so the goal is smoothness, cleanliness, and controlled feathering without breaking hair or creating frizz.

Bathing & Drying the Field Spaniel

Most Field Spaniels do well with a bath every 4–6 weeks, adjusted for lifestyle. Before shampooing, fully saturate the coat with warm water so product distributes evenly and rinses clean. Work shampoo through the feathering and between the toes, where debris collects.

After bathing, towel blot rather than rubbing to avoid frizz and tangles. Dry fully using a low- to moderate-force dryer, working in sections and combing the feathering as you go. A completely dry coat is less likely to mat and will lie flatter and cleaner.

Seasonal Coat Changes

Field Spaniels do not typically experience dramatic coat blows like double-coated breeds, but many will shed moderately in spring and fall. During these transitions, increase brushing frequency and pay closer attention to feathering, which can trap loose hair and create tangles if left unchecked.

Puppy vs Adult Coat Care

Puppy coats are finer and softer and can tangle easily in friction zones. Keep sessions short and positive, focusing on handling, gentle brushing, and combing. As the adult coat develops, grooming becomes more about maintaining feathering, keeping the coat lying correctly, and preventing small tangles from turning into mats.
