Grooming the Saint Bernard

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Saint Bernard comes in both smooth and rough coat varieties. Both carry a dense double coat, and both require consistent grooming to manage heavy seasonal shedding, keep skin healthy, and maintain the breed's clean, imposing presentation. Drying is critical for this breed — moisture trapped in the undercoat causes odor, skin irritation, and hot spots.

Coat

Smooth variety: Short, dense, tough outer coat with bushy tail; lying smoothly, without being rough to the touch.
Rough variety: Medium length, flat or slightly wavy; not curly or shaggy. More feathering on thighs and legs. Both varieties share a dense undercoat and require the same core approach: thorough brushing, complete rinsing, and full drying to the skin.

Character

Gentle, friendly, and patient. The Saint Bernard is steady, kind, and deeply devoted to its family. Easy-going temperament generally makes for cooperative grooming — early routines and consistent handling build lifelong ease with sessions, essential given the breed's size.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Detangling / mats in rough coat Apply Moisture Plus full strength to mat, wait 15 min, gently separate.
Drool staining on white areas First lather with Cleansing Shampoo, wait 5 min, rinse; follow with Moisturizing Shampoo.
Post-shed undercoat recovery Line brush daily with Maxi Care once shedding is finished.
Odor / damp undercoat smell Ensure thorough force-air drying to the skin after every bath. Moisture retention in the undercoat is the primary cause.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Line brush 2–3 times weekly (rough coat) or weekly (smooth coat), increasing to daily during seasonal shedding. Focus on friction areas: behind ears, collar zone, under chest, elbows, and breeching. Surface brushing alone allows undercoat to compact. Mist Maxi Care lightly to reduce coat breakage.

Bathing

Bathe every 4–6 weeks. Pre-rinse completely before applying shampoo. Use Moisturizing Shampoo for routine bathing; Cleansing Shampoo for staining or buildup. Rinse completely — residue in a dense coat causes dullness and skin irritation.

Drying

Never crate a wet Saint Bernard. Use a high-velocity dryer in sections, line brushing as you dry. Ensure the undercoat is completely dry to the skin — moisture trapped in dense undercoat leads to odor, hot spots, and skin problems.

Shedding

Heavy seasonal shedding in spring and fall. Daily brushing during coat blows is essential. Controlled blowout baths combined with force drying dramatically shorten the shedding cycle.
