Grooming the Belgian Malinois

A Belgian Malinois standing in a field

The Belgian Malinois is a high-drive working breed with a comparatively short, functional coat built for endurance and efficiency. Grooming supports skin health, manages shedding, and preserves the coat's tight, resilient structure. Over-conditioning, heavy products, or excessive trimming work against the breed's natural coat type.

Coat

The Belgian Malinois has a comparatively short, straight coat that is hard enough to be weather resistant, supported by a dense undercoat. The coat is very short on the head, ears, and lower legs. Hair is slightly longer around the neck, forming a subtle collarette, and on the tail and backs of the thighs. The coat conforms closely to the body — never standing out or hanging down. This is a functional working coat designed for endurance, protection, and efficiency rather than ornamentation.

Character

The Malinois is confident and alert, exhibiting neither shyness nor unwarranted aggression. While often reserved with strangers, the Malinois is deeply loyal and affectionate with its people. Naturally protective, quick, responsive, and highly driven when given direction. This is a breed whose coat must perform under pressure — grooming should support that purpose.

Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution
Dry, damaged coat Wet with warm water, apply Moisture Plus liberally, wrap in a warm towel 15–20 min, then shampoo with Moisturizing Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
Increasing undercoat after shedding Line brush daily with Maxi Care as soon as shedding is finished.
Showing on a hot, dry day Use Maxi Care as the only coat dressing.
Showing without full undercoat Super Coat diluted 50/50 while line brushing will hold coat up long enough for judging.
Extra volume Super Coat diluted 50/50 while line brushing. In high humidity, reduce product and rely on brushing technique.
Shedding around the house Spray with Maxi Care and brush daily to the skin. Shedding is normal and cannot be eliminated completely.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Brushing

Brush 2–3 times per week during maintenance periods; daily during seasonal shedding. Use a rubber curry or slicker brush for the surface coat, followed by a fine-tooth shedding tool or undercoat rake as needed. Lightly mist Maxi Care to improve brush glide and prevent coat breakage.

Bathing

Bathe every 4–6 weeks, more often during shedding seasons. Use Texturizing Shampoo to cleanse without over-softening the coat. Condition only when the coat feels dry or stressed.

Drying and Skin Health

Towel dry thoroughly, then air dry or use a low, controlled dryer. Avoid high heat. Moisture trapped in the undercoat leads to odor, irritation, and tight shedding.

Trimming

The Belgian Malinois should not be shaved — shaving disrupts coat regrowth and thermal regulation. Trimming is limited to nails, feet tidying if needed, and general cleanliness.

Shedding

The Malinois sheds consistently and experiences seasonal coat blows. Increased brushing — not increased bathing — is the most effective management approach during heavy shedding periods.
