Grooming the Belgian Tervuren

By Cindra Grooming Products — USA-Made Professional Grooming Essentials

The Belgian Tervuren is a long-coated, double-coated herding breed developed for endurance, adaptability, and all-weather work. Grooming is about preservation — not alteration. Proper care maintains coat structure, supports skin health, and respects the functional elegance that defines the Tervuren.

Coat

The Belgian Tervuren has a long, straight, close-fitting outer coat of medium harshness — neither silky nor wiry. Wavy or curly hair is undesirable. Beneath the guard coat lies a dense undercoat, with thickness varying by climate and season. Distinctive ornamentation includes a pronounced collarette around the neck (more prominent in males), feathering along the backs of the forelegs, abundant breeches, and a full, well-coated tail. Females typically carry less coat and ornamentation. A correct Tervuren coat should feel resilient and alive — never soft, cottony, or over-conditioned.

Character

The Belgian Tervuren is observant, confident, and discerning with strangers — never shy or apprehensive. With those it knows, the breed is affectionate, attentive, and deeply bonded. This intelligence and sensitivity make grooming an ideal opportunity for trust-building. Calm, consistent routines allow the Tervuren to remain cooperative during sessions.

Hands-On Grooming Guide

Line Brushing

Brush several times per week, daily during seasonal shedding. Line brushing ensures the dense undercoat is removed while preserving the outer coat's length and structure. Pay particular attention to the collarette, breeches, behind the ears, and tail — areas where coat is densest and tangles form easily.

Bathing

Bathe every 4–6 weeks. Rinse thoroughly — longer than expected — to avoid residue trapped in the undercoat. After bathing, towel dry thoroughly. Forced-air drying on low settings helps remove moisture from the undercoat and improves coat separation. Avoid high heat.

Shedding

Seasonal shedding is heavy and expected. Increase brushing frequency rather than bathing frequency during coat blows. Consistent line brushing shortens shedding cycles and keeps the coat healthy.
